- Chinchilla Facts
Did you know that some chinchillas are brought into the US illegally? They are captured from the wild and smuggled into the country. When you are looking to purchase a chinchilla, make sure you deal with a reputable dealer or breeder. Illegal chinchillas most likely will carry diseases and I know everyone wants a happy, healthy pet. Ask your friends and family if they can refer you to a good breeder. You may even want to talk to your veterinarian or your local pet and feed stores. Its worth the extra time to have all the correct chinchilla facts.
- Chinchilla Dust
Chinchillas love dust baths. They don’t like to get wet, so chinchilla dust keeps them clean and keeps their fur soft. When choosing a dust bath house, find one that attaches to the inside of the cage. Make sure it will keep the powdery dust from getting into the air in your home. You should look for one that is detachable and has enclosed plastic construction so your pet can go to bathe and not get the dust everywhere.
- A Chinchilla Cage
Choosing and setting up a chinchilla cage is fun and easy. Choose a metal chinchilla cage that your pet can’t chew through (not glass or plastic). Make sure there is plenty of room for play and exercise. Choose one with a bottom tray for easy cleaning. Line it with newspaper and clean it regularly. Next, you’ll want to add some fun accessories like chew toys, shelves to jump around, hammocks, a dust bath house, and a chinchilla wheel for exercise. Chinchillas like to hide too, so you may want to put a little cardboard box in the cage or some tubes to hide in. Find a nice spot in your home for the cage. It should be in a place where there is no wind, its out of the sun and the temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees.
