They come in various sizes. Mine are somewhat finely ground, some are closer to powder (not sawdust) and some are big chunks. With mom's giving birth, I'm not a fan of the big chunks. I don't think it's as comfortable. If you use wood shavings, stay away from cedar. Cedar is toxic to all animals and they should not be exposed to it. Some people have also chosen to use cage liners made out of fleece. I myself didn't care for it, because I just have too many chins/cages for it to work.
